Amritsar, Amritpal Singh, the incarcerated leader of the Khalistan movement and head of the “Waris Punjab De” group, will contest the Lok Sabha elections from Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib constituency. Despite being in jail, Amritpal plans to run as an independent candidate, as per his lawyer, Rajdev Singh Khalsa.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Amritpal Singh’s lawyer announced his client’s intention to contest the election after meeting him in Dibrugarh jail, where the Khalistan leader is being held under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the National Security Act (NSA). Amritpal Singh was arrested in April last year after a month-long manhunt.
The announcement has generated significant interest and speculation, as Amritpal Singh is a controversial figure with a strong following among Khalistan supporters. His father, Tarsen Singh, expressed caution about the news, stating that he would confirm whether his son would run for office only after meeting him on Thursday. He also mentioned that Amritpal had never previously indicated a desire to enter politics.
The Khadoor Sahib constituency is a notable seat, and Amritpal Singh’s candidacy could attract significant attention. His legal team and supporters are likely to rally behind him as he prepares to campaign from behind bars.
Amritpal’s intention to run for office while incarcerated under anti-terrorism laws raises questions about the legal framework and the broader implications for the upcoming elections in Punjab. His candidacy could ignite debates about the role of incarcerated leaders in Indian politics and the Khalistan movement’s impact on electoral dynamics.
Further developments are expected as Amritpal’s supporters mobilize and the legal process surrounding his detention unfolds.
