LAHORE: Inspector General of Police Punjab Abdul Kareem, alongside senior police officials, visited the Lahore Press Club, where he engaged with crime reporters in a “Meet the Press” program organized by the club. Kareem emphasized the crucial role of crime reporters in the fight against crime and the implementation of police reforms, while highlighting various initiatives under the leadership of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif to enhance policing in the province.
According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, Kareem acknowledged the contributions of crime reporters as instrumental in identifying issues and providing guidance in law enforcement efforts. He underscored the importance of collaboration between the media and police to promote improvements and balance within the policing system. The IG outlined initiatives such as automated systems, Safe Cities cameras, and virtual centers for women’s and child safety as part of the ongoing reforms.
Kareem reiterated the police’s commitment to delivering justice and improving service delivery across Punjab’s 800 police stations. He noted a significant decline in heinous crimes attributed to the efforts of the Crime Control Department, while also affirming strict measures against corruption and misconduct within the police force. The introduction of body cameras, funded by a Rs. 12 billion allocation from the Chief Minister, aims to enhance accountability and reduce corruption at police checkpoints.
He further discussed the near-elimination of property-related crimes and improvements in the traffic system. Kareem highlighted immediate actions against sexual crimes involving children and women, asserting that relatives or known individuals are often perpetrators in such cases. Additionally, he mentioned ongoing efforts to restore peace in the Katcha areas and the introduction of legislation against illegal weapons.
During the visit, President Lahore Press Club Arshad Ansari presented a shield to IG Punjab Abdul Kareem, while Kareem reciprocated with souvenirs to the club’s office-bearers on behalf of the Punjab Police.
