Hindutva Mob Replaces Flag at Historic Maharashtra Shrine

Mumbai: A Hindutva mob has desecrated the centuries-old Hazrat Ahmed Chishti Dargah in Maharashtra, replacing its traditional green flag with a saffron one, according to reports. The shrine, also known as Buwasind Baba Shrine, is in Rahuri town and has been a shared worship site for both Muslims and Hindus. This incident reflects ongoing tensions, as Hindutva groups have recently intensified claims that the dargah was originally a Hindu temple.

The vandalism has sparked concern among the approximately 14,000 Muslims in the area. Residents have reported targeted attacks, including stone pelting near the shrine and adjacent mosque. These events appear to be part of a broader pattern of increasing attacks on Muslim religious sites in Maharashtra.

No arrests have been made following the desecration. The incident underscores the need for enhanced protection of religious sites and addressing communal tensions. The attack is part of a larger narrative of violence and discrimination faced by Muslims in India, who form 14% of the population and continue to experience systemic marginalization.
