Islamabad: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan convened a strategic session to discuss the digital readiness of universities and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into higher education. The discussions aimed at leveraging emerging technologies to enhance educational infrastructure and academic offerings.

According to Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, the senior management committee, led by Chairman Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar, evaluated the necessary measures to adapt universities to the changing landscape of global higher education. The session included a presentation by Mr. Meng Gencang, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President at Huawei Global Education Division, focusing on AI’s role in reshaping industries worldwide.

The HEC outlined a phased approach for digital integration, addressing system strengths and gaps while considering local dynamics. The implementation roadmap includes foundational development, scaling, and system advancement, with a focus on embedding AI in academic programs through various courses and certifications. Dr. Akhtar stressed the importance of continuous digital upgrades to align with global educational advancements.

Mr. Meng Gencang highlighted AI’s impact on industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics, emphasizing the critical need to integrate AI within higher education. He explained China’s approach to AI advancement and Huawei’s investment in research and development to foster innovation. Gencang noted the potential for AI to revolutionize education systems and address talent demand shifts.

The session also explored challenges in talent cultivation, curriculum development, and AI literacy, with discussions on leveraging existing HEC infrastructure and the CPEC Consortium of Universities for expertise in emerging technologies.
