Government Pledges Support for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Sector

ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector, a crucial component of the nation’s economy. Haroon Akhtar Khan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, emphasized the sector’s significance during a ceremony marking World Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Day 2026 in Islamabad.

According to Radio Pakistan, Khan highlighted the critical role of approximately 7.14 million small and medium enterprises in Pakistan, which contribute nearly 40 percent of the country’s GDP and 30 percent of its exports, while providing employment for over 80 percent of the non-agricultural workforce.

Khan announced the establishment of a 30 billion rupees SME Development Fund, aimed at supporting initiatives to enhance competitiveness, increase exports, and drive sustainable economic growth. This fund is part of the government’s broader economic transformation agenda, underscoring the strategic importance of the MSMEs sector to Pakistan’s economic future.
