Government Announces Comprehensive Energy Sector Reforms

Islamabad: In an effort to enhance the efficiency and governance of Pakistan’s energy sector, Minister of State for Finance, Revenue, and Power Ali Pervaiz Malik outlined significant upcoming reforms in an exclusive interview with Pakistan Television News. The reforms aim to establish a strong regulatory framework to protect consumer interests following the privatization of Distribution Companies (DISCOs).

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Malik discussed improvements in corporate governance and auditing practices within the DISCOs to prepare for their privatization. He addressed concerns about electricity over-billing, assuring thorough investigations and rectifications of any discrepancies found. The minister also called for enhanced cooperation among provincial departments and law enforcement to tackle electricity theft. Additionally, Malik announced plans to decommission, auction, or liquidate inefficient and obsolete furnace oil plants to reduce unnecessary costs.
