First Lady Samina Alvi Advocates for Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities

Islamabad, First Lady Samina Alvi emphasized the importance of rehabilitation and assistive technology for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), stating that these are crucial for their long-term recovery and quality of life. Addressing a ceremony in Islamabad, she highlighted the significant contribution that differently-abled individuals can make to society with proper support.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, reports that the First Lady called for increased awareness to integrate differently-abled persons into mainstream society and end their deprivation by providing equal rights and services. She stressed the role of media, particularly the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, in creating public awareness about the challenges faced by PWDs.

Samina Alvi described disability as a global public health issue and encouraged stakeholders to adopt a positive approach towards accommodating PWDs through skilled education and job opportunities. She commended the rehabilitation centers in Pakistan and advocated for expanding their scope nationwide.

Additionally, the First Lady mentioned that special job quotas have been reserved for PWDs at federal and provincial levels and urged the private sector to offer employment opportunities to them. Dr. Palitha Mahipala, WHO Head of Mission, praised the First Lady for her efforts in raising awareness on breast cancer and the rights of persons with disabilities. WHO Technical Advisor Pauline Kleinitz added that the WHO is assisting in improving the availability of rehabilitation services globally, particularly in countries like Pakistan.
