Islamabad: Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, chaired the second meeting of the Committee on Genetically Modified (GM) Corn to review progress on the adoption of GM corn technology in Pakistan. The meeting focused on building consensus through scientific evidence and international best practices.
According to Press Information Department, the Committee reviewed actions from its previous meeting, including policy documents and stakeholder submissions. Discussions centered on the benefits of GM corn for agricultural productivity and food security, while addressing concerns about Pakistan’s maize milling industry and export markets. The meeting also considered recommendations on GM and non-GM maize coexistence, regulatory oversight, and supply chain management.
The Finance Minister highlighted the balance between technological advancement and industry protection. A working group will be formed to develop recommendations on regulatory frameworks and biosafety measures. The meeting included representatives from government, industry, and technical experts.
