Karachi: At a high-level National Symposium on Primary Health Care, Malik Mukhtar Ahmad Bharath, the Federal Minister of State for Health, reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to enhancing primary health care as a fundamental step towards achieving Universal Health Coverage. The event, attended by key national and provincial leaders, focused on aligning efforts with global health partners to create a resilient and inclusive health system in Pakistan.

Minister Bharath emphasized the nation’s long-standing commitment to primary health care, referencing the Alma Ata and Astana Declarations. With the approaching 50th anniversary of primary health care in 2028, he urged a renewed focus on equitable health access for all citizens.

He highlighted the National Health Vision as a foundation for the upcoming National Health and Population Policy, which aims to address challenges such as climate change and the spread of diseases. A key initiative discussed was the nationwide rollout of the Essential Package of Health Services, targeting critical areas like maternal and child health.

The Minister announced significant financial commitments, including a PKR 67.77 billion plan to eradicate Hepatitis C and $18 million to enhance pandemic preparedness. A proposal for PKR 33 billion aims to establish telemedicine centers to improve healthcare access and data management.

Mr. Bharath called for increasing public health spending and scaling up the health workforce, emphasizing the need for regulatory improvements in service quality. He acknowledged the support of development partners like the Gates Foundation and stressed the importance of multi-sectoral action to address social determinants of health.

The symposium underscored the government’s resolve to translate discussions into actionable policies, with the Minister expressing a commitment to working with all stakeholders for a healthier and more equitable future for Pakistan.
