FBR Introduces Daily Updates to Active Taxpayer List to Streamline Compliance

Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has introduced amendments to the Income Tax Rules, 2002, implementing daily updates to the Active Taxpayer’s List (ATL) to enhance accuracy and efficiency in taxpayer compliance. The changes, issued through S.R.O. 1638(I)/2024 on October 18, 2024, are intended to modernize the ATL system by replacing the weekly update model with a real-time, daily update structure.

According to Federal Board of Revenue, the revised ATL system will reflect any taxpayer’s active status immediately upon the filing of Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the current tax year. This change will also include taxpayers who file after the due date, provided they pay the required surcharge outlined in section 182A of the Income Tax Ordinance. The prior system, which limited ATL updates to an annual schedule in March, has been adjusted to offer instant recognition of compliance.

The FBR stated that the amendments are designed to enhance transparency and improve responsiveness, aiming to provide real-time status updates for taxpayers who meet their obligations promptly. This new approach aligns with FBR’s commitment to fostering a more efficient and supportive environment for tax compliance across Pakistan.
