Emergency Rule Imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Amid Rising Security Concerns

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Law and Justice Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar announced that a state of emergency and Governor’s Rule have been enacted in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, following a directive from the President advised by the Prime Minister. This development comes as part of constitutional measures under Articles 232 and 234, aimed at addressing the escalating security situation in the region.

According to Radio Pakistan, the provincial government’s functions have been suspended, transferring all administrative powers to the Governor. An eleven-member Advisory Council has been established to assist in managing the province’s affairs during this period. Additionally, a dedicated Secretariat has been created to oversee operations in twelve districts, which will be directly governed by the Federation.

In support of these efforts, the military has been deployed under Article 245 to assist in maintaining law and order. The decision to impose emergency measures was driven by a significant increase in terrorism and extremism incidents, with a recorded rise of 196 percent over the past two and a half years. The government cites the deteriorating security environment and insufficient local support in counterterrorism efforts as key factors necessitating this action.

Furthermore, separate sessions of the National Assembly and the Senate, along with a joint parliamentary sitting, are expected to be convened soon to formally endorse these steps.
