Dalit Man Assaulted in Mysuru for Refusing to Play Drum at Temple Event

Bengaluru, in a disturbing incident in Mysuru district, a 65-year-old Dalit man was reportedly assaulted for declining to play the drum at an annual temple event. The altercation took place in Makodu village, Periyapatna taluk, and has raised concerns about caste-based discrimination.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the victim, identified as Paramayya, was approached by an individual named Kumar to play the drum at the Basaveshwara temple’s annual pooja celebration. However, Paramayya, citing health reasons, refused to participate. This refusal reportedly led to Kumar assaulting and verbally abusing Paramayya in a caste-related manner.

M Sridhar, the inspector at Periyapatna police station, recounted the incident, confirming that Kumar had demanded Paramayya’s participation in the traditional drum beating, a customary role for the Dalit community in the village. Despite Paramayya’s son, Basavaraju, offering to fulfill the duty on behalf of his unwell father, Kumar insisted on Paramayya’s involvement, leading to the alleged assault.

The incident has sparked a dialogue about the persisting issue of caste-based discrimination and violence in rural communities. The Basaveshwara temple, a prominent local religious site, has been a place where all community members, irrespective of caste, have congregated for decades to celebrate the annual pooja. This event, however, casts a shadow on the village’s long-standing tradition of communal harmony.

Officials are currently investigating the matter, and the incident has highlighted the need for continued efforts to eradicate caste-based discrimination and promote social equality. The assault on Paramayya serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that still exist in addressing deep-rooted societal prejudices.
