Congress Protests in Srinagar Against Enhanced Powers for IIOJK Lt. Governor

Srinagar: The Congress party organized a protest in Srinagar to voice opposition against the recent amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, which grant increased powers to the Lieutenant Governor ahead of the assembly elections. The demonstration highlighted growing discontent with New Delhi’s governance approach in the region.

According to Kashmir Media Service, led by Congress IIOJK Senior Vice President Mohammad Anwar Butt, the protesters marched from the party’s office in Srinagar to MA Road. They expressed strong disapproval of the central government’s decision to transfer significant administrative powers to the Lt. Governor, describing it as a dictatorial move that undermines elected governance structures.

The demonstration saw participation from multiple Congress leaders and workers, who chanted slogans against the central government’s policies in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The event also witnessed the detention of several leaders by the police, underscoring the tensions surrounding the protest. Participants called for the repeal of the recent legislative changes and urged the restoration of democratic rights and peace in the region.
