Islamabad: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has issued a stern warning that any measures to block, suspend, or divert Pakistan’s rightful share of water would be viewed as an act of war, prompting a direct response from the nation.
According to Radio Pakistan, during the inaugural ceremony of the Sixth Pakistan Water Week 2026 in Islamabad, Gilani stated unequivocally that Pakistan would not permit water to be weaponized or used as a tool of geopolitical coercion. He underscored that the country’s water security, sovereignty, and national interests are non-negotiable, reflecting the strategic importance of water resources to the nation.
Gilani reaffirmed that the Indus Waters Treaty remains a binding international agreement, which cannot be unilaterally altered, suspended, or revoked by any party. Highlighting the critical link between Pakistan’s water security and its agricultural economy, food security, environmental sustainability, and overall economic development, he emphasized the need for robust measures to safeguard these resources.
In his address, Yousaf Raza Gilani advocated for increased investment in water conservation, efficient irrigation systems, modern water management technologies, research, and climate-resilient agricultural practices. His remarks underscore the urgency of addressing water security in the context of broader national and regional stability.
