Authorities Deny Funeral Prayers for Sibtain Masoodi at Srinagar’s Jamia Masjid

Srinagar: Indian authorities have denied permission for the funeral prayers of Dr. Sibtain Masoodi, father-in-law of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, at Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta, Srinagar. The decision has sparked condemnation from local leaders and organizations.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, authorities cited concerns over potential “law and order situation” as the reason for the denial. The family of Dr. Sibtain Masoodi was informed of the decision prior to the scheduled prayers.

Dr. Sibtain Masoodi, who was also the brother of Pampore MLA Justice (Retd) Hasnain Masoodi, was to be laid to rest after funeral prayers following Zuhr prayers at the mosque.

In response, senior APHC leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq condemned the administration’s actions, criticizing the use of force during moments of grief. The statement expressed that such measures alienate the local population by preventing peaceful observance.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference issued a statement offering condolences to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the bereaved family. The statement criticized the authorities for prohibiting the funeral prayers at Jamia Masjid.

APHC senior leader Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosawi Al-Safwi also expressed sorrow over the passing of Dr. Masoodi. He commended the deceased’s character and prayed for strength for the family during this difficult time.
