Guwahati, An Assam Rifles soldier in India’s violence-hit Manipur state committed suicide while on duty. The soldier, identified as Gopal Biswakarma, 48, took his own life by shooting himself with his service rifle in the Churachandpur area.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident occurred during the early hours while Biswakarma was on duty. He was found lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound. A statement from the Indian Defence spokesperson confirmed the tragic event, adding that the circumstances leading to the soldier’s suicide are under investigation.
Assam Rifles is a branch of the Indian Army that primarily operates in the northeastern states of India, including Manipur, which has experienced ongoing violence and ethnic tension. The incident highlights the mental health challenges and pressures faced by soldiers deployed in conflict-prone areas.
