Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, during her visit to China, engaged in discussions with a high-level delegation from Alibaba Cloud, a leading Chinese technology company, focusing on the potential integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in various sectors within Punjab. The discussions highlighted the interest of Alibaba Cloud in Punjab’s IT sector, particularly in AI-based governance initiatives, and explored possibilities for a strategic partnership in public services.

According to Directorate General Public Relations – Govt of Punjab, the meeting encompassed a range of topics, including the application of AI in agriculture, healthcare, socio-economic programs, and climate forecasting. Chief Minister Sharif emphasized the integration of AI in Punjab’s governance and mentioned the province’s efforts to establish a comprehensive AI policy. She highlighted Punjab’s development of the world’s largest public-sector cancer hospital and expressed openness to Chinese collaboration in IT advancements.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif noted Punjab’s position as a leader in the digital economy, citing its young and skilled workforce. She also mentioned that AI training had been extended to government officials and members of the provincial cabinet. During the meeting, Alibaba Cloud Senior Vice President Li Jiaping briefed the chief minister on the company’s operations and discussed potential collaborations in artificial intelligence and small and medium enterprises for overseas Pakistanis.

Li Jiaping acknowledged the importance of the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. He stressed AI’s role in media campaigns, medical training, and its potential impact on cancer diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding establishing a data center in Pakistan.

Provincial Advisor on Artificial Intelligence Ali Mustafa Dar provided insights into Punjab’s AI initiatives, noting that AI education has been made a mandatory component of the curriculum from Grade 1. He further elaborated on the successful use of AI in sectors such as the Safe Cities Authority, agriculture, healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
