Srinagar: Concerns are escalating among civil society activists in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) regarding alleged attempts by the Modi-led government to alter the demographic composition of the region, which they claim threatens the majority status of its Muslim population.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the revocation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, has led to the issuance of domicile certificates to hundreds of thousands of non-locals, which activists interpret as an attempt to transform the Muslim majority into a minority. This action is part of what they describe as a covert campaign to erase Kashmiri identity through settler colonialism.
Activists have labeled these demographic changes as war crimes, arguing that they are in stark violation of United Nations resolutions and the Geneva Convention. They assert that the true motive behind the abrogation of Article 370 was to facilitate the demographic transformation of IIOJK, which poses significant threats to the region’s political and cultural integrity.
The activists are calling on the international community to recognize and respond to these maneuvers, emphasizing the need for UN intervention to halt the Indian government’s demographic alteration efforts in Kashmir.
