Calcutta: A young Muslim man was fatally shot by police in Murshidabad, West Bengal, amid ongoing protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. The incident has intensified unrest in the region, resulting in several injuries and numerous arrests as tensions continue to escalate.

The deceased, identified as 21-year-old Ijaz Momin, succumbed to his injuries at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. The protests have also left three others injured, with two identified as Ghulam Mohiuddin Sheikh and Hasan Sheikh, who are currently receiving treatment at Jangipur Hospital.

Violence has surged since Friday, with more than a dozen protesters reported injured in clashes. In response to the unrest, authorities have detained 150 individuals. The protests were ignited by the recent approval of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill by the Indian Parliament, sparking widespread discontent.

In an effort to quell the disorder, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for calm, assuring residents that the newly passed law will not be enforced in the state. Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court has mandated the continued presence of central forces in Murshidabad until Thursday to maintain peace.

In a separate incident in Samaherganj, a father and son were tragically killed in an attack on Saturday. Despite the proximity of events, local residents insist the murders are unrelated to the ongoing protests, with the motive still undetermined.
