Urgent Flood Advisory Issued for River Chenab as High Water Levels Expected

Lahore: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an urgent flood advisory warning for the River Chenab, projecting medium to high flood levels from July 4th to July 7th, 2024. This precautionary alert has been sent out to all relevant authorities and departments to brace for potential flooding due to rising water levels.

According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority announcement issued on 02 July 2024, the NDMA Tech Team and Flood Forecasting Division have predicted a significant increase in water levels in all major tributaries of the River Chenab at Marala and downstream areas. The advisory specifically targets commissioners and deputy commissioners across multiple districts, including DG Khan, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Gujrat, and others, urging them to prepare and respond effectively to the impending situation.

The PDMA has outlined several critical measures to ensure readiness and mitigate the impact of the flood. These include maintaining round-the-clock staffing at District Emergency Operation Centers for coordination and response, sharing updated information with line departments, and remaining on high alert for any major incidents or developments. Additionally, the establishment of a streamlined communication system through phone calls, SMS alerts, and announcements in mosques has been emphasized to ensure timely and efficient dissemination of weather forecasts, advisories, and emergency instructions to the community.

Local authorities are also instructed to advise the public on safety precautions and manage essential crossings and infrastructure to prevent accidents and ensure public safety during high water levels.
