UP businessman killed in police custody 

Lucknow, December 15, 2022 (PPI-OT):A 30-year-old businessman Balwant Singh who was picked up by the Special Operations Group (SOG) in a case of robbery in Shivli area, died in police custody in Kanpur Dehat in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Singh’s family said that torture by cops claimed his life. Nine policemen were suspended following the incident.

“Nine policemen including SHO of Shivli police station Rajesh Singh, Sub-Inspector Prashant Gautam, who was SOG chief, two SIs Gyan Prakash Pandey and Sampat Singh, four head constables Sonu Yadav, Anoop Kumar, Durgesh Kumar and Vinod Kumar and one constable Jai Kumar have been suspended,” Superintendent of Police, Kanpur Dehat, Suniti told PTI.

Singh was called for questioning after three men arrested for robbing his uncle Chadra Bhan on 6 December mentioned his involvement in the crime. Singh’s family members said he died due to police torture while police claimed that Balwant Singh complained of chest pain in the wee hours of Tuesday and died in the hospital. The post-mortem report reportedly confirmed injuries on the body of Balwant Singh, according to a report in Hindi daily Dainik Jagran.
