United Nations Secretary-General Commends Pakistan’s Disaster Management Efforts During Visit to NDMA


Islamabad: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres visited the National Emergencies Operations Centre (NEOC) at the NDMA Headquarters in Islamabad, accompanied by Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary A. DiCarlo and other senior UN officials. The visit focused on Pakistan’s transition to a proactive, technology-driven disaster risk management system.



According to Press Information Department, the UN delegation received a detailed briefing from Chairman NDMA, Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, on NEOC’s role in disaster monitoring, early warnings, preparedness, and emergency response. The briefing highlighted the integration of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and the Internet of Things in developing precise Disaster Early Warnings, aimed at enhancing disaster forecasting and preparedness against risks such as water scarcity and climate-related challenges.



Pakistan has offered its technological solutions, including NEOC and the Next Generation Technology project, for shared utilization with the United Nations. A demonstration of the “National and Global Disaster Lens 2026-27” showcased Pakistan’s advanced disaster risk intelligence capabilities.



The UN Secretary-General praised Pakistan’s disaster preparedness and resilience efforts, emphasizing the importance of replicating this proactive approach in other disaster-prone regions. The visit underscored the commitment of both Pakistan and the United Nations to strengthen cooperation in disaster risk reduction and climate resilience through innovation and international partnerships.
