Islamabad, During a Pakistan Day reception in New York, President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Dennis Francis lauded Pakistan’s significant contributions to international peacekeeping and its active role in addressing global challenges. The event, hosted by the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations, highlighted Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to multilateralism and its efforts in various UN capacities.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, President Francis acknowledged Pakistan’s dedication to UN peacekeeping missions and its broader engagement with the United Nations. He commemorated Pakistan’s National Day, reflecting on the country’s journey since the adoption of the Lahore Resolution and its subsequent achievements on the global stage.
President Francis specifically mentioned Pakistan’s advocacy against Islamophobia and its proactive stance on climate change and environmental sustainability. He applauded Pakistan’s collaboration with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to address concerns about Islamophobia, emphasizing a recent resolution that Pakistan helped to advance.
In a special nod to Ambassador Munir Akram, President Francis highlighted Pakistan’s leadership during its presidency of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 2021, praising the country’s efforts in achieving consensus on critical issues like debt relief and concessional assistance.
Ambassador Munir Akram, in his welcome remarks, reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the UN Charter’s principles and detailed Pakistan’s ongoing contributions across various UN forums. He also announced Pakistan’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2025-2026 term, emphasizing Pakistan’s readiness to contribute to international peace and security.
The reception, attended by diplomats, UN officials, and members of the international community, underscored Pakistan’s role as a key player in the United Nations, committed to fostering global peace, security, and development.
