UN to Review Countries on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights Compliance


Geneva, The United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights is set to conduct its forthcoming session from February 12 to March 1, where it will evaluate the adherence of Romania, Mauritania, Ireland, Iraq, Indonesia, and Sweden to the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. This review is part of a routine assessment process aimed at ensuring that the countries fulfill their obligations under the Covenant.



According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the six nations, among the 172 States parties to the Covenant, will present their reports to the Committee, which comprises 18 independent international experts. These presentations are scheduled over several days and will address the countries’ efforts and challenges in implementing the Covenant’s provisions. The sessions will involve discussions on various topics, based on reports submitted by the States and contributions from non-governmental organizations.



The review schedule is as follows: Romania’s delegation will be assessed on February 13 and 14, Mauritania on the same dates but in the afternoon sessions, Ireland on February 15 and 16, Iraq on February 19 and 20, Indonesia on February 20 and 21, and Sweden on February 21 and 22. These dialogues, taking place at the Palais Wilson in Geneva, are open to the accredited press and will be live-streamed on UN Web TV, offering transparency and accessibility to the global audience.



This session represents a critical mechanism for monitoring and promoting the implementation of economic, social, and cultural rights worldwide. It provides an opportunity for constructive dialogue between the Committee and the State parties, aiming to identify progress, address challenges, and recommend actions for further advancement in the protection and realization of these fundamental rights.
