Islamabad: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has praised Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in promoting dialogue and mediation on the international stage, highlighting its significant role in easing tensions between the United States and Iran. Addressing a joint press event with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Guterres emphasized Pakistan’s importance as a mediator in global conflicts.
According to Radio Pakistan, Guterres acknowledged Pakistan’s longstanding contribution to the United Nations and its role as a trusted intermediary, which has facilitated negotiations in one of the world’s most volatile disputes. He noted that Pakistan’s involvement was instrumental in the delivery of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and a subsequent ceasefire agreement, setting the stage for future diplomatic engagements.
In his remarks, Guterres expressed that Pakistan’s actions serve as a model for solidarity and responsibility in difficult circumstances. He also highlighted the country’s critical perspective in global discussions, particularly its efforts to mediate between Iran and the United States. Guterres urged all involved parties to end ongoing conflicts and return to diplomatic negotiations, emphasizing the United Nations’ commitment to working alongside Pakistan to uphold international principles.
Ishaq Dar, speaking at the event, noted the significance of Pakistan’s diplomatic achievements, which facilitated direct dialogue between the United States and Iran after nearly half a century. Dar underscored Pakistan’s consistent support for peace initiatives in regions such as Gaza and reaffirmed its commitment to resolving disputes, including those concerning Jammu and Kashmir, in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions.
The event concluded with Guterres planting a sapling at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, symbolizing the enduring partnership between the United Nations and Pakistan.
