UN Secretary-General Calls for Renewed Commitment to Non-Violence on Gandhi’s Birthday

New York: On the International Day of Non-Violence, marking the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, UN Secretary-General emphasized the urgent need for global efforts towards peace, echoing Gandhi’s lifelong commitment to equality, respect, and justice.

According to United Nations Pakistan, the Secretary-General’s message highlighted the widespread violence affecting various regions of the world, including Ukraine, Sudan, and the Middle East, describing the severe impact of conflicts that create destruction and fear. He pointed out that rising inequalities and climate-related challenges are further destabilizing peace, while online hate speech continues to manifest in physical violence.

The recent Summit of the Future, as noted by the Secretary-General, provided a platform for hope, where nations united to strengthen multilateralism and address root causes of conflict such as inequality, poverty, and societal divisions. He urged countries to actualize their commitments to forge a peaceful world.

Drawing on Gandhi’s philosophy, the Secretary-General reiterated that non-violence remains humanity’s most potent force, capable of overcoming the most daunting challenges. He called for the international community to bolster institutions that uphold non-violent principles, thereby honoring Gandhi’s legacy and striving towards a harmonious global society.
