Islamabad: A United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Preparatory meeting is currently taking place in Islamabad, with Pakistan and the Republic of Korea serving as co-hosts. The two-day event aims to address key challenges and advancements in peacekeeping operations ahead of a ministerial meeting scheduled for next month in Berlin.

In his opening remarks, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Under Secretary General for Peace Operations, acknowledged the robust support for UN peacekeeping. He noted the challenges and risks faced by peacekeepers and emphasized the crucial role of technology in enhancing both operational effectiveness and the security of peacekeepers. He stressed that the effectiveness of peacekeepers relies on continued political commitment.

Atul Khare, UN Under Secretary General for Operational Support, praised Pakistan’s steadfastness as one of the largest contributors of troops and police to UN peacekeeping missions. He highlighted the importance of promoting women’s inclusion in peace and security as a priority for the United Nations.

UN Police Adviser Faisal Shahkar called for collective efforts to ensure that UN police are adequately prepared, equipped, and resourced for their mandates. He emphasized the role of human rights compliant and gender-responsive policing in protecting and empowering communities.

The preparatory meeting is set to lay the groundwork for discussions in Berlin, featuring panel sessions on the future of peacekeeping. Topics include the evolving challenges to peacekeeping operations, the role of technology in ensuring safer and more effective missions, and the involvement of regional organizations in supporting UN peace operations.

The meeting also provides an opportunity to highlight Pakistan’s significant contributions to UN peacekeeping efforts. Over the years, Pakistan has deployed 235,000 peacekeepers across 48 UN missions, with 181 Pakistani peacekeepers having lost their lives in the service of international peace and security.
