Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk called for an immediate halt to the conflict in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, where recent clashes in Buthidaung township have led to the displacement of tens of thousands, predominantly Rohingya civilians. Turk stressed the need for all parties to protect civilians and adhere strictly to international law.
According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, increased tensions between ethnic Rakhine and Rohingya, fueled by the military, have exacerbated the situation. Turk underscored the critical risk of further atrocity crimes and urged the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army to cease hostilities. He also appealed to Bangladesh to extend protection to those fleeing the violence and called on the international community to provide robust support.
