Geneva, UN experts have issued a stern warning against the ongoing Israeli military operation in eastern Rafah, Gaza, describing it as part of a seven-month campaign that they claim could amount to genocide. They have called for an immediate halt to the assault, amidst international efforts to negotiate a ceasefire and address the humanitarian crisis.
According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the situation escalated on May 6, when Israeli forces advanced into Rafah, closing the crucial border crossing with Egypt. This action has severely restricted the flow of humanitarian aid, supplies, and fuel necessary for the survival of approximately 1.4 million Palestinians in the area.
The experts emphasized that the invasion violates international humanitarian law, given the dire circumstances on the ground. They criticized evacuation orders issued by Israel, stating that they do not comply with the law that requires the protection of displaced civilians and ensures their access to essential services such as food, water, and medical care.
Furthermore, the experts highlighted the severe conditions in the so-called ‘expanded humanitarian area’ of Al Mawasi, which is already struggling with inadequate resources and cannot support an additional influx of evacuees. They urged influential states to exert pressure on Israel by stopping the flow of arms and withdrawing investment and political support to halt what they describe as a disastrous military campaign.
