Geneva, Alexandra Xanthaki, the UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, will be visiting Chile from March 25 to April 5, 2024, following an invitation from the Chilean government. Her mission is to evaluate various aspects concerning the enjoyment of cultural rights within the country, with particular emphasis on inclusion and diversity.

According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, during her visit, Xanthaki aims to explore issues surrounding the right to partake in cultural life, access diverse cultural expressions, and engage in decision-making processes related to sustainable and cultural development. She plans to engage in a cooperative dialogue with the Chilean authorities on the implementation of cultural rights, focusing on Afro-Chileans, migrants, and Indigenous Peoples.

The Special Rapporteur’s itinerary includes meetings with government officials, academics, artists, and civil society representatives across various cities, including Arica, Rapa Nui, Santiago, and Valparaíso. These interactions are designed to integrate multiple perspectives from different regions of Chile into her assessment.

Xanthaki will conclude her visit with a press conference in Santiago, which will be exclusive to members of the press. Her findings and recommendations will be compiled into a report for the Human Rights Council, scheduled for presentation in March 2025.
