Islamabad: The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, in partnership with the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF), hosted a kickoff event to initiate the countdown to the FIFA World Cup 2026 and highlight the cultural and economic connections fostered by this global event. The event, held at the embassy, was attended by Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker, PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani, and key figures such as Minister of Railways Hanif Abbasi and Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Rana Mashood Ahmad Khan, along with representatives from Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, and various members of the diplomatic and sports communities.
According to Embassy of the United States of America, CDA Baker emphasized the significance of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as an opportunity to showcase the United States. It also marks the beginning of an ‘American Decade of Sport,’ with the U.S. hosting several major international sporting events, including the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. PFF President Gilani expressed excitement for the event, citing the enthusiasm in Pakistan for the inaugural 48-team tournament in North America and praised the U.S. for its hosting capabilities.
The evening featured the unveiling of an oversized football from a Sialkot-based manufacturing company, followed by a ceremonial gift exchange and recognition of two female Pakistan National Football players by Coca-Cola. The event concluded with an informal penalty-kick challenge for the guests.
