ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, marking the International Day of Zero Waste, has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to a future that prioritizes sustainability, particularly within the fashion and textile sector.
The International Day of Zero Waste is observed with this year’s theme, “Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles,” emphasizing the critical need to address waste from these industries. The Prime Minister highlighted the necessity of moving away from a linear economy, which follows a “take-make-dispose” model, and adopting a circular approach that emphasizes waste reduction and resource efficiency.
Prime Minister Sharif described waste pollution as a significant crisis impacting the environment, public health, and the economy. He noted that this year’s theme underscores the importance of sustainability in an industry known for its substantial waste production.
He also outlined Pakistan’s Plastic Waste Management Action Plan, which aims to phase out single-use plastics, promote biodegradable alternatives, and enhance recycling initiatives.
