ISLAMABAD: Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, has emphasized the necessity of transparency in wheat procurement practices to ensure accessibility and efficiency for farmers across all wheat-producing regions. Chairing a meeting of the National Wheat Oversight Committee in Islamabad, Hussain highlighted the importance of timely and effective procurement mechanisms to prevent market exploitation and benefit the farming community.

According to Radio Pakistan, the committee reviewed ongoing wheat procurement operations across provinces, focusing on the readiness of systems and facilitating farmers during the harvest period. Hussain underscored that delays in procurement could lead to market distortions and price differentials, adversely affecting farmers. He directed institutions to maintain operational procurement systems during the crucial harvest window.

Discussions also included strategies for enhancing wheat productivity long-term. Hussain pointed out the importance of promoting certified seed varieties, balanced fertilizer usage, and modern mechanized farming practices. These measures are viewed as key to increasing productivity per acre and strengthening food resilience.

The Minister further stressed the need for coordinated federal and provincial efforts in agricultural extension services, awareness campaigns, and the availability of agricultural inputs. He noted that synergy among institutions is vital for implementing policies effectively, especially amid climate variability and global supply chain pressures.
