KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has instructed the Energy Department to accelerate the distribution of Solar Home System kits, aiming to provide sustainable energy solutions to 275,000 low-income households across the province. The directive is part of an Rs18.2 billion initiative designed to deliver affordable, clean electricity to both off-grid and protected on-grid areas.
According to Chief Minister Sindh, the project, launched under the guidance of Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, seeks to install solar-powered electricity solutions in deserving households. The meeting, chaired by Shah at the CM House, included Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and other key officials, who reviewed the progress of the Solar Home System Project. The initiative has already seen over 15,000 solar kits installed.
The Energy Department, through the Annual Development Programme, is implementing the project. Beneficiaries receive a Solar Home System package that includes a 180-watt solar panel, central control unit with a battery, a charge controller, a fan, and LED lights. The project targets 132,000 off-grid households and 143,000 on-grid consumers.
The meeting highlighted that large-scale installations have been completed in various districts, with an emphasis on rural and remote areas. The project, which began in April 2025, is expected to conclude by June 2027. Beneficiaries are selected based on energy consumption and poverty criteria, with priority given to those registered with the Benazir Income Support Programme.
Murad Ali Shah emphasized the importance of transparent and efficient distribution to ensure that the benefits reach the most deserving families. He noted that the project aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and aims to reduce household expenditure while improving public health and extending productive hours for women and girls.
The Chief Minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to renewable energy solutions, aiming to reduce the urban-rural electricity gap and foster economic opportunities through the project’s implementation.
