Islamabad: The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) and the Green Pakistan Initiative (GPI) are collaborating to introduce modern technology and improved seeds in Pakistan’s agricultural sector, with a focus on genetically modified (GM) maize. A significant policy breakthrough has been achieved as the Cabinet Committee has granted in-principle approval for the cultivation of GM maize, a move anticipated to enhance resistance to pests, diseases, and adverse weather conditions.

According to Radio Pakistan, the approval marks a step forward in the country’s agricultural development, enabling the sector to adopt modern seeds and achieve higher yields while addressing the challenges posed by climate change. The Chief Executive of SIFC’s Green Pakistan Initiative and the Federal Finance Minister were present at the committee meeting where this decision was made. The initiative also highlights the ongoing involvement of global multinational companies such as Monsanto, Bayer, Cargill, Syngenta, and Corteva, which have played a crucial role in the seed industry in Pakistan since the 1980s.

A State Bank report underscores the importance of these multinational companies in introducing agricultural innovation and new technologies through hybrid seeds, further supporting the growth and modernization of Pakistan’s agricultural sector. The collaboration between SIFC and GPI is expected to pave the way for more resilient and productive farming practices in the country.
