Sheikhupura Reports 45% Drop in Serious Crimes Following New Police Initiatives

Sheikhupura: A notable decline in serious crimes has been reported in the Sheikhupura region, with incidents of robbery, theft, and vehicle thefts significantly reduced, aligning with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision for a Crime-Free Punjab. The initiative, under the oversight of Regional Police Officer (RPO) Athar Ismail, has led to a 45% decrease in heinous crimes compared to last year.

According to Punjab Police announcement issued on 24 September 2024, the successful reduction in crime rates is primarily due to the newly formed Eagle Squad, which now operates across all three districts in the region. This squad has enhanced the efficacy of the emergency response system connected to the 15 helpline, contributing to the swift decline in criminal activities. Specifically, the data shows a 45% reduction in robbery and theft incidents, alongside a 13% decrease in vehicle thefts.

Furthermore, a dedicated operation targeting drug dealers and illegal arms holders has led to a 37% increase in registered cases against such activities over the previous year. This operation has resulted in the seizure of significant quantities of illegal substances, including over 3,000 kilograms of charas, 28 kilograms of heroin, 9 kilograms of ice, 154 kilograms of opium, and 65,000 liters of alcohol.

The campaign, however, has not been without sacrifice. Three police officers lost their lives, and 21 were injured in confrontations with armed criminals during these operations. RPO Athar Ismail reaffirmed the commitment to continue these proactive measures under the Crime-Free Punjab initiative, emphasizing the prioritization of citizen safety and crime eradication.
