ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges convened at the Parliament House to address several privilege motions concerning alleged misconduct by public officials. Chaired by Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi, the meeting saw participation from multiple senators, including those who had filed the motions.
According to Senate of Pakistan, the Committee postponed the consideration of a motion against Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan due to his absence. In another case, the Committee resolved an issue involving Deputy Commissioner Keamari District, Karachi, Abdul Sattar Hakro, who acknowledged his failure to meet Senator Nadeem Ahmed Bhutto, submitting a written apology that was accepted by the Committee.
The Committee also examined a motion by Senator Palwasha Mohammad Zai Khan regarding alleged derogatory remarks by a Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) official. The Committee decided to summon the involved officer for further clarification in the next meeting.
A motion by Senator Hasna Bano against Deputy Commissioner Hub, Balochistan, regarding alleged inappropriate behavior was withdrawn after the senator confirmed the matter had been resolved.
The Committee then turned its attention to issues at the Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design (PIFD), scrutinizing the continued tenure of Vice Chancellor Hina Tayyaba Khalil. Senator Bushra Anjum Butt raised concerns about nepotism and the Vice Chancellor’s extended tenure beyond her contract. The Committee expressed displeasure over the absence of PIFD Senate member Deepak Perwani from the meeting and demanded further clarification on the Vice Chancellor’s tenure.
The Committee plans to address these issues in its next meeting, summoning relevant ministry officials and representatives from the Higher Education Commission to provide necessary documentation and explanations.
