Senate Committee Criticizes Delays and Rejects New Unapproved Schemes in PSDP Review

Islamabad: The Senate Standing Committee on Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, under the leadership of Senator Quratulain Marri, convened to scrutinize the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) allocations for the 2026-27 fiscal year. The Committee rejected new unapproved schemes and emphasized the timely completion of ongoing projects to prevent cost overruns.

According to Senate of Pakistan, the meetings held at Parliament House were attended by several senators who reviewed budget allocations for various ministries and divisions. The discussions highlighted the need for prioritizing projects nearing completion while addressing the challenges faced by different sectors. The National Highway Authority (NHA) informed the Committee about significant financial liabilities and urged for timely fund releases to expedite crucial projects like the dualization of the Kuchlak-Zhob section of the N-50 Highway.

The Committee also reviewed the progress of ongoing projects across different ministries, including Information and Broadcasting, Maritime Affairs, and Health Services. Concerns were raised over reduced allocations for the Thar region, and the Higher Education Commission’s proposal for an E-Sports Arena was unanimously rejected. SUPARCO’s update on satellite projects and the Water Resources Division’s briefing on major dam projects were also discussed. The Committee plans to hold further meetings with specific divisions to address budgetary needs and project timelines.
