Sales Tax Adjustment and Regional Allocations Dominate Pakistan’s Budget Talks


Islamabad: The National Assembly of Pakistan is actively engaged in discussions regarding the budget for the upcoming financial year, with significant focus on sales tax adjustments and regional funding allocations. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar addressed the Assembly, affirming that the Sales Tax on Services will remain under provincial jurisdiction. He announced a reduction in the proposed sales tax on imported solar panel components from 18% to 10%, following consultations with allied parties.



In his address, Dar assured financial support for Sindh’s universities, allocating 4.7 billion rupees, and announced the expansion of the Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company Limited’s scope nationwide. He emphasized reconciliation and consensus in addressing budgetary matters.



The discussion saw contributions from various assembly members. Zulfiqar Ali Bhatti praised the economic indicators and the budget’s presentation. Fateh Ullah Khan highlighted water scarcity issues, while Awais Haider Jakhar advocated for increased funding in Southern Punjab to promote equitable development.



Concerns were raised over the budget’s inclusivity. Sanjay Perwani noted the absence of minority welfare measures, and Sohail Sultan criticized the lack of relief and minimum wage increases. Ms. Mahtab Akbar Rashdi opposed the family pension cap, urging a review.



Calls for agricultural support were made by several members. Zulfiqar Ali Behan suggested declaring an agriculture emergency to aid small farmers, while Muhammad Mobeen Arif criticized indirect tax reliance. Nasir Iqbal and Muhammad Arshad Sahi urged for reduced fertilizer prices to support farmers.



The reduction in solar panel sales tax was welcomed by Shah Ahad, who called for further cuts. Nauman Islam Shaikh argued against any sales tax on solar panels. Ali Khan Jadoon sought more tax exemptions for erstwhile FATA and PATA regions.



Akhtar Bibi commended the government for prioritizing Balochistan’s issues and presenting a balanced budget. Sher Ali Arbab and Muhammad Idrees Khan emphasized political reconciliation and harnessing tourism and hydropower in Kohistan, respectively.



As discussions continue, the Assembly aims to refine the budget to address regional needs and economic challenges, fostering growth and stability across the country.
