Rahul Gandhi to Champion Public Voice as Leader of Opposition, Says Ashok Bhan

Srinagar: Ashok Bhan, a Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India and a noted geopolitical analyst, has confirmed that Rahul Gandhi will persist in his role as a key advocate for the public in the Indian Parliament, serving as the Leader of the Opposition.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Bhan highlighted in his statement that the leadership role, often held by members of Gandhi’s family in the past—including Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi—grants Rahul Gandhi not only symbolic significance but practical influence in the governance of India. “This role, while not constitutionally mandated, provides Gandhi certain privileges that include participating in the appointment processes for key civil servants and public officials,” Bhan said.

Gandhi’s responsibilities extend to his involvement in selection committees for top positions at major statutory bodies like the Central Vigilance Commission, the Central Information Commission, the Central Bureau of Investigation, the National Human Rights Commission of India, and the Lokpal. Bhan emphasized the importance of Gandhi’s role in these committees, noting that, “His presence ensures that the opposition’s voice is heard in critical decisions, balancing the government’s dominance.”

Additionally, the role accords Gandhi the status of a cabinet minister, complete with an office and staff within the Parliament premises. His active participation is expected to reinforce the checks and balances necessary in a vibrant democracy.

Congress leaders, including President Mallikarjun Kharge and Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha Pramod Tiwari, expressed strong support for Gandhi’s leadership, stating that his presence in Parliament would ensure that the voices of the marginalized and oppressed are amplified.

On assuming his role, Gandhi stressed the opposition’s duty to articulate the populace’s concerns and counteract any governmental overreach, promising a proactive engagement in parliamentary proceedings. Concluding his statement, Bhan called upon the ruling NDA coalition to demonstrate democratic tolerance by appointing an opposition member as the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha, thus ensuring a balanced political dialogue.
