Lahore: Punjab’s manufacturing landscape has seen significant shifts over the past fifty years, characterized by a dramatic increase in cotton yarn production alongside a notable decline in traditional sectors such as bicycles and diesel engines. According to Gilani Research Foundation, the region’s manufacturing sector has undergone a structural transformation, with labour-intensive industries showing stagnation or decline, while engineering and electrical sectors have expanded significantly.

The comprehensive analysis, drawn from the Punjab 50 Years Compendium, highlights diverging trajectories across various industries, reflecting shifts in technology, consumer demand, and industrial organization. Among the key findings, cotton textile production showed substantial growth, with yarn output increasing from 150,705 to 976,627 tons, and the number of units rising from 43 in 1971-72 to 299 in 2020-21. However, production trends across textile segments are not consistently smooth, indicating that output growth has not always matched capacity increases.

In contrast, the bicycle industry experienced a clear long-term decline, with production falling from 127,678 units in 1971-72 to 79,310 units in 2020-21. This decline is indicative of a structural shift in transport preferences, with an increasing reliance on motorized vehicles. Similarly, the diesel engine industry saw a contraction in production and employment, reflecting reduced demand for diesel-based equipment and the advent of alternative technologies.

On the other hand, electrical manufacturing industries, including electric fans, motors, and transformers, demonstrated steady growth, attributed to increased electrification and industrial demand. Electric fan production alone increased from 174 thousand units in 1971-72 to 2,499 thousand units in 2020-21, illustrating the sector’s robust expansion.

This evolving industrial landscape underscores a broader transformation within Punjab’s manufacturing sector, with a gradual shift towards mechanized and engineering-based production. The overall trajectory points toward a more diversified industrial economy, reflecting deeper changes in technology, consumer demand, and production systems over the past five decades.
