Karachi, Punjab has embarked on an ambitious journey towards environmental sustainability with the launch of “Sathra Punjab”, a first-of-its-kind mega project in the country dedicated to solid waste management. Announced after a special meeting chaired by Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, this initiative aims to revolutionize the handling and disposal of solid waste across the province through the adoption of a digital monitoring system and the outsourcing of waste management services.
According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, the project entails a comprehensive strategy for the segregation, collection, and disposal of solid waste. Under the directives of Chief Minister Sharif, a digital monitoring system will be implemented to oversee the efficient execution of the project, ensuring that solid waste management vehicles and facilities adhere to the highest standards of cleanliness. Provincial Minister Zeeshan Rafiq has been tasked with closely monitoring the outsourcing process to guarantee transparency and efficacy in the system’s operation.
The meeting highlighted the project’s sophisticated approach to waste sorting at transfer stations, distinguishing between organic, inorganic, iron, and plastic materials. Plans include the construction of 23 landfill sites and 66 transfer stations across all divisional headquarters of the province, signifying a significant upgrade in the infrastructure supporting waste management. The initiative was discussed in the presence of Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, Minister for Information and Culture Parvez Rasheed, Zahid Bukhari, MPA Sania Ashiq, as well as various secretaries, commissioners, deputy commissioners of Lahore, CEO WMC, and other officials.
This landmark project marks a pivotal step towards addressing the challenges of solid waste management in Punjab, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing the province’s environmental health and public cleanliness.
