Lahore: The Provincial Minister for Energy in Punjab, Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar, led a high-level meeting to evaluate ongoing efforts to harness canal-based hydropower potential and promote renewable energy across the province. Key discussions centered on the Community Ecosystem-Based Small Hydropower Projects 2026 Framework, aiming to generate clean, affordable electricity.

According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, the meeting highlighted the identification of 40 potential sites for small hydropower projects on Punjab’s canal network, to be developed in phases. A proposal for a hydropower project on the Lower Bari Doab Canal in Okara was presented and received commendation from the Minister, who urged swift progress on the initiative.

Provincial Minister Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar emphasized the Punjab Government’s commitment to advancing renewable energy under the vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif. He outlined that utilizing the province’s canal hydropower potential would bolster energy self-sufficiency and stimulate economic growth in rural areas. The Minister also noted the employment opportunities these projects would create and urged rapid implementation of all renewable energy initiatives.

The meeting included a briefing on the Punjab Electric Power Regulatory Authority (EPRA) Bill 2026’s final draft, with the summary submitted to the Provincial Cabinet for approval. This regulatory framework aims to enhance transparency and attract investment in Punjab’s power sector. Additionally, the Punjab Power Development Board (PPDB) will offer a single-window facilitation mechanism to streamline approvals and expedite project execution.

Attendees of the meeting included Secretary Energy Muhammad Ajmal Bhatti, Additional and Deputy Secretaries, and executives from the Punjab Power Development Board and associated companies.
