Faridkot: The illegal detention of social activist Shankar Sharma by the Faridkot police in Punjab, India, has sparked public protests, resulting in his release last night.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Sharma, who leads the Jal Jeevan Bachao Morcha, has been vocal against the concrete lining of the Indira Gandhi and Sirhind Feeder canals in the region.

Residents of Faridkot and nearby areas argue that this practice adversely impacts the environment by preventing the natural seepage of water, which is crucial for recharging the groundwater table—a vital drinking water source for the community. The morcha asserts that the concrete lining hampers the natural filtration process, potentially depleting groundwater levels and increasing the risk of water scarcity. Environmentalists have also raised concerns about the impact on the local ecosystem.

Reports indicate that police officers detained Sharma from his residence early Monday morning, which prompted immediate outrage among locals. Community members quickly assembled in front of the City Police Station, chanting slogans and demanding his release. As the protest grew, police released Sharma by 5 PM. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Tarlochan Singh denied any illegal detention, stating, “Shankar was summoned for questioning regarding a farmers’ protest march and was later released.”

However, protesters dismissed the police’s explanation, accusing them of attempting to intimidate Sharma and other morcha members. Speaking after his release, Sharma commented, “This act of threatening and terrorising morcha members will only strengthen our resolve against the concrete lining of the canals.”
