Protests Erupt in Kashmir Over Power Crisis and Tariff Hikes

Srinagar, Residents of Srinagar and Kulgam districts in occupied Jammu and Kashmir took to the streets to protest against the Modi-led Indian government’s policies, which they claim have led to increased hardships due to erratic power supply and rising electricity tariffs.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) organized a protest rally in Kulgam district, while similar demonstrations occurred in Srinagar. Protesters voiced their frustration over the severe power cuts and the unjust increase in power tariffs affecting the region. Under the leadership of Mohammad Afzal Parray, Chairperson of the District Development Council (DDC) Kulgam, the CPI-M criticized the local Power Development Department for its continued winter power schedules and unscheduled outages, aggravating the daily lives and economic conditions of the inhabitants.

Parray highlighted the adverse effects of power shortages on the community and condemned the financial strain imposed on already economically vulnerable groups due to tariff increases. The disconnection of power for non-payment was also a major concern raised by the demonstrators.

CPI-M leaders called for immediate governmental action to rectify the electricity crisis and mitigate the burdens faced by the people of Kashmir, urging for a more equitable and considerate approach to power management in the region.
