Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Champions Multilateral Cooperation at SCO Summit in Astana

Astana: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif led the Pakistani delegation at the SCO Council of Heads of State meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan, from July 3-4, 2024. The summit focused on pivotal regional and global issues, resulting in the adoption of the Astana Declaration and various strategic agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation among SCO member states.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions at the CHS addressed key political, security, and economic challenges, culminating in the approval of approximately 20 decisions across different domains of cooperation. Notable among the summit’s outcomes were three statements dedicated to enhancing the safety of drinking water and sanitation, effective waste management, and reinforcing the principles of good neighborliness. Additionally, the council ratified several plans and strategies for continued economic and security collaboration, including a significant agreement on environmental protection signed by the relevant SCO ministers.

In his address, Prime Minister Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to the “Shanghai Spirit,” advocating for mutual trust, respect, and shared prosperity. He emphasized the role of the United Nations in coordinating international efforts and stressed the importance of resolving longstanding disputes peacefully in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions that recognize the right to self-determination.

The Prime Minister also highlighted Pakistan’s strategic position as a potential trade and transit hub for the SCO region and discussed the country’s perspectives on issues in Gaza and the prospects for peace in Afghanistan.

As the current Chair of the SCO Council of Heads of Government, Pakistan is poised to lead efforts in fostering enhanced cooperation among SCO members, focusing on areas of mutual interest and regional stability.
