Prime Minister of Pakistan Discusses Key Global Issues with UN Secretary-General in New York


New York: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting covered crucial topics including the “Summit of the Future,” the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the conflict in Palestine, and the rise of Islamophobia.



According to Press Information Department, the Prime Minister appreciated the Secretary-General’s initiative to organize the “Summit of the Future,” expressing hope that its outcomes would assist developing countries in bridging financial gaps necessary for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate objectives. He briefed Secretary-General Guterres on the severe circumstances in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting Pakistan’s concerns regarding India’s actions in the region. He stressed the importance of resolving the dispute to ensure lasting peace and stability in South Asia.



The Prime Minister urged the Secretary-General to leverage his position to facilitate the implementation of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions concerning Jammu and Kashmir and to support the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination. He condemned the actions of Israel in Palestine, calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, and demanded accountability for Israel’s actions against Palestinians. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the creation of a sovereign State of Palestine.



Furthermore, Prime Minister Sharif addressed the issue of rising Islamophobia and discrimination against Muslims globally, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to fostering international peace and security. He noted Pakistan’s upcoming role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2025-26 term. Secretary-General Guterres acknowledged Pakistan’s contributions to the UN, particularly its role in international peacekeeping efforts.
