ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has highlighted the critical importance of restoring peace and stability in the region, underscoring the commitments made under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. This was conveyed during a telephonic conversation with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister described the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as a durable framework for enhancing mutual understanding and respect in the region. He expressed concern over the recent regional tensions and urged Iran and other relevant parties to exercise restraint to avoid jeopardizing the progress towards peace made in recent months.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace, Prime Minister Sharif assured President Pezeshkian of Pakistan’s readiness to facilitate dialogue and support efforts aimed at maintaining peace and stability. Additionally, he conveyed his regards to Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei.
The Iranian President, in response, expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Sharif and Pakistan’s leadership for attending the funeral of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, appreciating Pakistan’s constructive role in regional peace. Both leaders reviewed the progress of decisions made during President Pezeshkian’s recent visit to Islamabad and agreed to expedite their implementation to bolster bilateral cooperation.
They also committed to maintaining close contact and continued consultations on regional peace and mutual interests. In a social media post, Prime Minister Sharif reiterated the need for restraint, dialogue, and diplomacy to protect peace gains, affirming Pakistan’s role as a mediator for lasting peace. Both sides agreed to advance the bilateral cooperation agenda established during the Iranian President’s visit to Islamabad.
