ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has underscored the importance of employing modern technology to digitally monitor the nation’s fuel supply chain. During a high-level meeting in Islamabad aimed at reviewing reforms and strengthening the institutional capacity of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the Prime Minister called for the development of a comprehensive system to oversee fuel transportation. He suggested using the Federal Board of Revenue’s tracking system as a model for this initiative.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for restructuring OGRA to boost its efficiency and directed the recruitment of reputable experts from the private sector through a transparent, merit-based process. Sharif assured that the government would offer the necessary professional expertise to support the reforms and restructuring of OGRA, while also highlighting the importance of protecting public funds and preventing exploitation or interference within the system.
He further instructed the establishment of formal communication channels between regulatory bodies and their respective ministries and urged for the acceleration of oil refinery upgrades under the approved policy. The Prime Minister insisted on the strict implementation of the government’s reform agenda across all institutions.
During the meeting, it was revealed that OGRA has made considerable strides in digitally monitoring the oil supply chain, from port to petrol pump, with systems like the National Monitoring Dashboard, Tanker Track and Trace system, Depot-Tank Telemetry systems, the Rahguzar mobile app, and a Central Monitoring Cell already in place. These initiatives aim to effectively monitor petroleum stocks, movement, and sales. A data-driven campaign in July 2026 uncovered several instances of hoarding and supply disruptions, prompting show-cause notices and legal actions.
The Prime Minister lauded OGRA’s reform efforts and directed the full operationalization of the modern digital system to achieve transparency, effective monitoring, and the elimination of hoarding and illegal profiteering in the oil and gas sector. Ensuring an uninterrupted fuel supply at fair prices remains a top government priority, Sharif stated, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards negligence or corruption in this area.
