Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari highlighted the ongoing challenge of tobacco use on World No Tobacco Day, underscoring the significant health and economic risks associated with tobacco products globally and in Pakistan. He urged for collaborative efforts between governments, civil society, and individuals to enhance regulation and awareness to protect public health.

According to Press Information Department, President Zardari emphasized the dangers tobacco products pose, citing World Health Organization data that attributes over 7 million deaths annually to tobacco, including 1.6 million from second-hand smoke. He noted the particular vulnerability of children and young adults, who are targeted by the tobacco industry through evolving products and marketing tactics designed to foster addiction.

The president pointed to research indicating growing public health concerns from the use of various nicotine products, including cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and noted worrying patterns of poly-substance use. He called for stronger awareness, regulation, and prevention measures to address these issues, stressing the serious health risks and economic burdens they impose on individuals and families.

Zardari also highlighted the link between tobacco use and non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and chronic respiratory conditions, which place pressure on health systems. He urged national and provincial legislatures to enact and enforce laws to safeguard future generations, while also calling on parents, educators, artists, and community leaders to play a role in shaping awareness and discouraging tobacco use at the community level.
